    Contemplation of Both Unreality and Reality


    佛言。觀天地。念非常。觀世界。念非常。
    The Buddha said: "Look up to heaven and down on earth, and they will remind you of their impermanency. Look about the world, and it will remind you of its impermanency.

    觀靈覺。即菩提。
    But when you gain spiritual enlightenment, you shall then find wisdom.

    如是知識。得道疾矣。
    The knowledge thus attained leads you anon to the Way."

    Commentary:  Contemplation of both unreality and reality


    A lot of Buddhist scriptures had taught about the illusory existence of all things, which is nothing more than high speed repetitions of formation and annihilation. The principle is similar to the flicker of static frames to produce motion pictures. Then how quick is such kind of regeneration? According to the Sutra of the King of Benevolence, there are 60 moments at a snap of the fingers, and each moment in turn contains 900 times of regeneration. Bodhisattva Maitreya had even brought it further that at a handclap or a snap of the fingers, 320 trillion instances of thoughts can be created. That is to say all physical and mental phenomena regenerate hundreds of trillion times every second! It takes at least the bodhisattvas of the eighth stage to see them clearly. The Dharma tells us such truth that your mobile phone is actually undergoing continuous regeneration, the earth is undergoing continuous regeneration, and you yourself are also undergoing continuous regeneration!
    佛教很多经典都有讲述万事万物的存在只不过是不断快速生灭的假象。当中的原理就好比静态的胶卷在快速翻动时会变成连续动态的影像一样。那这些生灭有多快?《仁王经》说一弹指间有六十刹那,一刹那中有九百次生灭。弥勒菩萨更说在拍手弹指之间,有三百二十兆念,就是说所有物质与精神现象,每秒钟都生生灭灭数以百兆次!这些现象起码要八地菩萨才能看清。所以佛法告诉我们这些真相,你的手机其实是在不停生灭,这个地球在不停生灭,你也在不停生灭!

    From a macroscopic perspective, our world is also experiencing formation and annihilation ceaselessly. It sequentially goes through the four periods of Formation, Abiding, Destruction and Emptiness, each lasting for one middling kalpa or approximately 340 million years, and one middling kalpa can be divided into 20 small kalpas.
    从宏观的角度看,我们的世界也是不断在经历生灭变化。它按序经过成、住、坏、空四个阶段, 每一个阶段历时一个中劫,即约三亿四百万年,并可分为二十个小劫。

    During the period of Formation, the material world is formed first and then followed by the world of sentient beings. The next stage is the period of Abiding, in which the world exists stably, but sentient beings begin to create karma and then circulate in the six paths of samsara. On the other hand, disasters of starvation, disease, and war rage in every small kalpa. Thereafter the period of Destruction begins. During this period the outbreak of devastating fire occurs first, followed by flooding, and then wind storm. In the course of these three disasters, the world of sentient beings is destroyed first, and then the material world is wiped out. During the fourth period of Emptiness, only an empty space is left because apart from the four dhyana heavens, the realm of Sensuous Desire and the realm of Form had all been destroyed. Sentient beings as a result are reborn in other worlds within the Great Chiliocosm. After the period of Emptiness, a new world will be formed again.
    在成劫中,器世界首先形成,然后是有情世间出现。接着是住劫,世界安稳存在,但有情众生开始造业,并在六道中生死流转。而在每一个小劫中,必会经历饥馑灾、疾疫灾、刀兵灾三种灾难的肆虐。接着就是坏劫,在坏劫中先出现火灾,继而是水灾,最后风灾。在这三灾中,有情世间先被摧毁,最后器世界也不复存在。第四阶段是空劫, 这时除了四禅天外,欲界及色界都已经坏灭,只剩下虚空,有情众生转生于三千大千世界的他方世界。待空劫过后新世界再重新形成。
